Casa Rural in Sanxenxo

We have arrived at our second Casa Rural and it is beautiful...dream-like, really.  Especially for me because there are sheep, chickens, a rooster, a vegetable garden, a traditional gallego horreo and a vineyard with grapes still on the vine.

Manolo and Rosi are the owner-operators and this property has been in Manolo's family for generations, it originally belonged to his great-grandparents.  There are 2 large homes on the property as well as a smaller house where Manolo's mother lives.  One of the larger homes is where Manolo and his family live and the other large house has been restored and converted into a bed-and-breakfast.  Manolo and Rosi both work full-time and their daughter attends the university in Santiago, they also have a teenage son.

As you can see from the pictures posted below, the house and property are beautiful and - more importantly - easy to find and accessible with a normal car.  It feels like we are in a very remote location but in reality we are 10 minutes from one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Spain and centrally located, with access to many sites in the Rias Baixas (Lower Estuaries) area of Galicia.  A good home base for a few days of exploring.

All over Galicia you see ho'rreos - elevated granaries where people keep/kept their grains, potatoes, even seafood in short-term storage to protect from the elements and from vermin.  Traditionally they are made of either stone (Galician granite) or wood and elevated on stone columns and have red tile roofs.  They usually have a cross or some other type of decor on the end of the roof.

  2. I am in love, perhaps strangely so, with the tile on the stair-fronts. Reminds me of pictures you sent from Cadiz when you went to school there- beautiful tile work too. Caryl
